On Thursday (September 8, 2022), Avelo Airlines announced the opening of a new base at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, Florida from fall 2022. Fort Myers will become the carrier’s fourth base, joining Los Angeles’ Hollywood-Burbank Airport (BUR), Southern Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) and Orlando International Airport (MCO). Avelo expects to create over 35 new Fort Myers-based jobs, including Avelo Crewmembers, and positions with Avelo business partners operating at RSW. Roles will include Airport Customer Service, Aircraft Technical Operations and Maintenance, Pilots, Cabin Crew and Supervisors. From November 2022, Avelo will base one 189-seat Boeing 737-800 at RSW.

In Thursday’s announcment, Avelo Airlines’ Chairman and CEO, Andrew Levy, said,

“The opening of Avelo’s fourth base in Fort Myers this fall will enable us to serve more destinations, add more flights, operate more airplanes, fly more Customers and employ more Crewmembers. Based on the success of our initial route between Southern Connecticut and Fort Myers, we have announced four additional destinations that will take flight from RSW this fall – creating a meaningful source of new visitors to Southwest Florida. This is just the beginning.”

Also commenting on the new Fort Myers base, Lee County Airport Authority’s Executive Director, Ben Siegel, CPA, C.M., added,

“Following the recent announcement of nonstop flights to four new markets from Southwest Florida International Airport, we are pleased to see that Avelo Airlines is also going to make an investment in creating more jobs at RSW to support their operations in Fort Myers. We look forward to working with Avelo and being a part of their growth in Southwest Florida.”

Currently, Avelo operates several flights per week between Fort Myers and New Haven, Connecticut. From November 10, 2022, the carrier will add four new destinations from RSW including Raleigh-Durham (RDU), Binghamton, New York (BGM), Kalamazoo, Michigan (AZO) and Lansing, Michigan (LAN).

Launched on April 28, 2021, Avelo Airlines was founded with the simple purpose of inspiring travel. The carrier operates a fleet of 11 single-class Next Generation Boeing 737s and offers customers a refreshingly smooth experience, convenience, and low everyday fares. The carrier plans on expanding their fleet to 14 aircraft by the end of 2022 and 16 by the first quarter of 2023. Avelo currently serves 31 popular destinations across the U.S. from their bases at Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) and Orlando International Airport (MCO).
