Avelo Airlines has announced a successful recapitalization, as well as a streamlining of their network, including an expansion of their Lakeland, Florida base. As part of this process, Avelo will close bases in Mesa, Arizona, Raleigh-Durham, N.C., and Wilmington, N.C.

On Tuesday (January 6, 2025), Avelo Airlines announced a successful recapitalization, resulting in a cash position that is one of the strongest in the U.S. airline industry relative to their size. The carrier will use this cash infusion and balance sheet strength to execute their long-term strategy, with emphasis on Central Florida and its base at Lakeland International Airport (LAL). Avelo will add two more aircraft in Lakeland expanding their LAL based fleet to three aircraft, while adding over 40 additional local jobs. In addition, Avelo will base one 737‑800 at Tampa International Airport (TPA) to further support their expanding Central Florida network.
Nationally, Avelo is streamlining their network around four current bases, including Central Florida / Lakeland (LAL), New Haven, Conn. (HVN). Philadelphia / Delaware Valley (ILG), and Charlotte / Concord, N.C. (USA). Additionally, the airline will open a base in Dallas / McKinney, Texas (TKI) in late 2026. As part of this network realignment, Avelo will close their bases in Mesa, Ariz. (AZA), Raleigh-Durham, N.C. (RDU), and Wilmington, N.C. (ILM).
Avelo will also modify their fleet with the removal of six Boeing 737-700NGs, leaving their fleet primarily operating with more efficient Boeing 737-800NGs. These changes will enable Avelo to focus on sustainably scaling five core bases in 2026, and to prepare for growth in the coming years, facilitated by the company’s recent order for up to 100 Embraer 195-E2s. Starting in mid-February, Avelo will also increase flight frequency on routes to Atlanta, Ga. (ATL) and Charlotte / Concord, N.C. (USA) from Lakeland. In addition to added frequencies, Avelo will continue service from LAL to Detroit, Grand Rapids, Nashville, New Haven, Philadelphia / Delaware Valley, Rochester, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Avelo Airlines’ purpose is to ‘Inspire Travel’ by saving travelers time and money. The carrier offers safe, convenient travel, everyday low fares, and a caring travel experience. Avelo also stands out as a leading U.S. airline in on-time performance and reliability. The airline currently operates a fleet of Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft, and will become the first U.S. airline to fly Embraer 195‑E2s.
