On Friday (May 20, 2022), Austrian Airlines announced the resumption of nonstop service between Vienna and Los Angeles, with flight OS 081 departing Vienna at 09:55 this morning. Thanks to Madame Tussauds’ wax figures, departing passengers were greeted with the Hollywood créme de la créme including Marilyn Monroe, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sandra Bullock. The wax figures were a popular selfie attraction, causing a flurry of flashbulbs in front of the Los Angeles gate. Austrian’s guests were also treated to a range of culinary delights. The carrier will operate five weekly flights on the route, increasing to six from July, through mid-October 2022. Today’s flight marks the first time Austrian Airlines has served the U.S. West Coast since 2019.

In Friday’s announcement, Austrian Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer, Michael Trestl, said,

“We are already very well represented in the east of the USA with Chicago, Washington and two airports in New York. We are pleased to be able to offer non-stop flights to the west coast again with the new flights to Los Angeles. The metropolis of millions is a popular holiday destination for Austrians and a transfer hub for onward flights with our partners. At the new destination, we also expect a balanced number of local and transfer passengers who change trains in Vienna.

After two years of corona-related travel restrictions, we are starting an already well-booked summer with the entire fleet, a dense European route network and attractive overseas connections with increased frequencies. In the intercontinental area, the focus is particularly on the American market, which also plays an important role for tourism in Austria and Vienna. In addition to the six weekly connections between Vienna and Los Angeles, there will also be daily flights to and from Chicago and Washington during the summer peak. Newark and JFK airports in New York will also be served daily again, namely in the mornings and evenings.”

Also commenting on the resumes service to Los Angeles, Flughafen Wien AG’s Management Board Member, Julian Jäger, added,

“Directly from Vienna to the popular Hollywood metropolis: Los Angeles is a great one city and the perfect starting point for touring the west coast of the USA.”
