In celebration of Papua New Guinea’s upcoming 50th anniversary on September 16, 2025, Air Niugini has revealed a stunning new Airbus A220 livery.

On Sunday (August 31, 2025), Air Niugini unveiled a striking new livery, celebrating the upcoming 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea on September 16, 2025. The brand-new aircraft, affectionately dubbed the ‘People’s Balus,’ features a vibrant livery that incorporates Papua New Guinea’s national flag and the official 50th Independence Anniversary logo. This unique livery serves as a flying tribute to the nation’s rich heritage, proudly showcasing the colors of Papua New Guinea both domestically and around the region. The aircraft’s intricate painting process was carried out at the Airbus facility in Mirabel, Canada by a dedicated team of 120 painters, who worked 24/7 over three shifts. The aircraft will be flown from Mirabel to Port Moresby in September 2025.
In Sunday’s announcement, Air Niugini’s Acting CEO, Samiu Taufa, said,
“This aircraft is more than just a new addition to our fleet, it is our first brand new, next generation jet aircraft and captures the spirit of our nation and our aspirations for the future. As we celebrate 50 years of independence, the ‘People’s Balus’ stands as a testament to our journey and our commitment to progress.”
Currently, the aircraft has the Canadian test registration, C-FOWU, but once PNG CASA registration requirements are completed, the ‘People’s Balus’ will be registered P2-PGA. This will be followed by the issuing of a PNG Certificate of Airworthiness.
Powered by new-generation Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, and featuring advanced aerodynamics, the Airbus A220 delivers an over 20 percent reduction fuel burn per seat and a 50 percent smaller noise footprint compared to the aircraft it will replace. The aircraft's cabin offers an exceptional inflight experience, with wide seats, extra-large windows, spacious overhead bins, free Wi-Fi, and variable ambient lighting.
The introduction of the A220 marks a key milestone in Air Niugini’s fleet renewal program, with the modern and efficient aircraft type eventually replacing older generation Fokker and Boeing 737 aircraft. Air Niugini has ordered a total of eleven A220s, and three are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025, with the rest to be delivered over the next three years.
