On Monday (October 25, 2021), Play Airlines announced the appointment of Rakel Eva Sævarsdóttir as the company’s new Director of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility effective November 2021. In her new role, Rakel Eva will implement the airline’s sustainability and CSR strategies, while defining PLAY’s goals related to environmental issues, governance and operation. Rakel Eva joins PLAY from renowned multi-national food processing company Marel, where she focused on sustainability, primarily within the fish industry. Previously, she worked as a manager with Deloitte Iceland, where she was involved in building a new service line within sustainability consulting. Rakel Eva was also one of the founders of Fortuna Invest, and Instagram initiative designed to increase diversity in the financial markets.

In Monday’s announcement, PLAY’s CEO, Birgir Jónsson, said,

“PLAY intends to lead by example in sustainability and CSR as these issues are becoming ever more important to us as a business and as people. Customers, investors, and the PLAY team all believe this is a priority in today’s environment. As a business, PLAY has a unique opportunity to prioritize sustainability in CSR right from the start since the company is young and just beginning to grow. We are therefore lucky to get Rakel Eva aboard as she has been a trustworthy advocate of these issues. I am excited to see her take action.”

Commenting on her new role at PLAY, Rakel Eva Sævarsdóttir, added,

“The airline industry has rarely been as interesting as now when it faces considerable challenges and opportunities related to sustainability. The airlines that intend to be competitive in the next five to ten years will have to tackle these issues with great responsibility and set clear and measurable goals in the field. PLAY intends to lead in this field, so I am clearly very excited, and proud, to have been offered to partake in this journey with this amazing group of people.”

Founded in 2019 by Arnar Magnússon, PLAY is a new Iceland-based low-cost carrier (LCC) which operates flights between Iceland and Europe, and has future plans to offer trans-Atlantic long-haul service between Europe and North America. The airline launched their inaugural passenger revenue flight on Thursday, June 24, 2021, with service between Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and London Stansted (STN).
