ITA Airways to Launch New Service From Rome Fiumicino to Malé; First A330neo Test Flight Completed

ITA Airways will launch new service between Rome Fiumicino and Malé, the capital of the Maldives. The route will operate twice weekly from December 16, 2023 through March 25, 2024. The carrier’s first Airbus A330-900neo test flight in blue livery has also taken place.

On Friday (April 28, 2023), ITA Airways announced the launch of new service between Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Velana-Malé International Airport (MLE) in the Maldives. For the winter 2023/2024 season, the route will operate twice weekly from December 16, 2023 through March 25, 2025. Flights will depart Rome at 22:10 and arrive in Malé at 11:25+1. The return flight departs Malé at 13:25 and arrives in Rome at 19:45 (all times local). With the new Malé service, ITA Airways’ intercontinental network grows to 12 destinations, including current service to New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, Washington, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Tokyo and New Delhi.

In a separate press release on Friday (April 28, 2023), ITA Airways announced the first test flight of their new Airbus A330-900neo featuring the carrier’s new blue livery. The test flight took place from Airbus’ Toulouse headquarters, with the aircraft flying in cruise to complete the preparatory cycle before entry into operations. Dedicated to Gelindo Bordin, Olympic champion and first Italian Gold medalist the five-ring marathon, the new A330-900neo will join the ITA fleet in June. Compared to previous generation aircraft, the Airbus A330-900neo delivers a 25 percent reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
