Iberia announced on Wednesday that former Vueling CEO Javier Sánchez-Prieto has taken the top job at Iberia as the carrier’s former Chief Executive Luis Gallego will take over from Willie Walsh at IAG.
Today (September 9, 2020), Iberia announced that Vueling’s former President and CEO, Javier Sánchez-Prieto has now taken the top job at Iberia. With the retirement of IAG’s long-time leader, Willie Walsh, Iberia’s former President and CEO, Luis Gallego, will now lead IAG. Mr. Sánchez-Prieto held the position of Director of Strategic Planning and Finance at Iberia from 2013-2016. In Wednesday’s announcement, Iberia’s new President and CEO, Javier Sánchez-Prieto said,
“It is an honor and a great satisfaction to return to Iberia, despite the difficult times the industry is going through. The Iberia team has shown in recent years that it is capable of all kinds of challenges and difficulties, managing to write a success story in recent years. I am sure that all together we will succeed one more time.”
Mr. Sánchez-Prieto holds a degree in Economics and Business Studies from Complutense University and a Technical Aeronautical Engineering degree from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. During his previous tenure at Iberia, he led the company’s ‘Future Plan’ which resulted in a return to profitability after several years of losses. Prior to his elevation to the position of Director of Strategic Planning and Finance at Iberia, which he held from 2013-2016, Mr. Sánchez-Prieto was part of the Iberia Express launch team with responsibilities including strategic planning, finance, purchasing, systems, fleet, human resources and legal advice.
