On Saturday (March 27, 2021), Saudi Arabian Airlines (SAUDIA), the national carrier of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, marked the 10th anniversary of service to the People’s Republic of China. The first flight took place on March 27, 2011 and was operated with a Boeing 777-200. In 2017, the route was upgraded to a 777-300ER, and in 2019 to a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. When service first started in 2011, the route was operated as a tag flight with Jeddah-Riyadh-Guangzhou service, which has now grown to four nonstop flights from Riyadh and three from Jeddah. SAUDIA operates from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport’s Terminal 2, which opened in April 2018.
Marking the 10th anniversary of service to China, SAUDIA’s Country Manager for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Mr. Reham Zarei, said,
“Thanks to SAUDIA’s outstanding contributions to the global efforts to fight the pandemic, the Saudi Arabia-Guangzhou route has been instrumental during these unprecedented times. In leading up to the tenth year of operations, the airline has grown from strength-to-strength in its presence in China, providing an important air link connecting economic and business ties via SAUDIA’s operational hubs in Riyadh and Jeddah.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Civil Aviation Administration of China and the Guangzhou airport authority for their continued and ongoing support of SAUDIA’s operations. We look forward to increasing our partnership and cooperation in order to build on the successes so far. On behalf of the SAUDIA family, I also extend my gratitude and appreciation to our colleagues in China who have made profound contributions to the airline’s success in Guangzhou through their commitment and dedication to providing exceptional guest experiences.”
SAUDIA offers seamless connections between the Northern Hemisphere and mainland China via their Jeddah and Riyadh hubs, with convenient onward domestic service in China through their codeshare partner, China Southern Airlines. In recent years, SAUDIA has invested heavily in their fleet of more than 145 standard body and widebody aircraft, and now operates one of the world’s youngest fleets, with an average age of five years. The carrier currently offers service to over 90 destinations across four continents from all 28 domestic airports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. SAUDIA was awarded a Five-Star rating from APEX in December 2020, as well as Diamond status by APEX Health Safety in January 2021.
