Qatar Airways announced on Wednesday an expansion of their codeshare partnership with Malaysia Airlines. In a separate announcement, the airline also added eight new destinations to their 2020 schedule.
Today, Qatar Airways announced the expansion of their codeshare partnership with Malaysia Airlines which has been in place since 2001. The new agreement will double the destinations offered to Malaysia Airlines’ passengers on the Qatar Airways network. Additionally, four new Southeast Asian destinations will be available to Qatar Airways’ guests will be available for the first time. While the current codeshare includes 10 Qatar Airways destinations, the new agreement opens 20 more Qatar Airways destinations in Europe, America and Africa for Malaysia Airlines’ customers. Likewise, Qatar Airways’ customers will benefit from service to Sibu and Alor Setar in Malaysia as well as Medan and Surabaya in Indonesia on Malaysia Airlines. Today’s agreement brings the number of codeshared routes in Malaysia Airlines’ network to 24. In Wednesday’s announcement, Qatar Airways’ Group Executive Chairman, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said,
“Since 2001, both airlines have witnessed the significant benefits codeshare cooperation have brought, providing passengers with unrivalled service and seamless connections. The expansion of codeshare cooperation between Qatar Airways and Malaysia Airlines is a natural next step in the strengthening of our partnership.”
Also commenting on Wednesday’s announcement, Malaysia Airlines’ Group Chief Executive, Mr. Izham Ismail added,
“Malaysia Airlines is delighted to further develop and grow our relationship with Qatar Airways with this codeshare agreement. Through this cooperation, we will be able to provide travel options for our outbound travelers as well as inviting more travelers to experience the beauty Malaysia has to offer. We look forward to sharing our Malaysian hospitality further and provide a truly Malaysian experience for our passengers.”
In a separate announcement from the Kuwait Aviation Show, Qatar Airways revealed the addition of eight new destinations to their 2020 schedule. The destinations include Nur-Sultan and Almaty (Kazakhstan), Cebu (Philippines), Accra (Ghana), Trabzon (Turkey), Luanda (Angola), Lyon (France) and Siem Reap (Cambodia). Speaking at the 2020 Kuwait Aviation Show, Qatar Airways’ Group Chief Executive, H.E. Mr. Akbar Al Baker said,
“The Kuwait Aviation show is the perfect platform for us to kick start the New Year and unveil some of our exciting plans for 2020. Eight new destinations will be joining our network this year in addition to the recently announced gateways of Santorini, Greece; Dubrovnik, Croatia; and Osaka, Japan. With these new routes, our operations expand to 177 destinations around the world, reinforcing our position as one of the world’s most connected airlines. This ensures we can continue to provide our passengers more options and flexibility when planning their business and leisure travel.”
Qatar Airways is the national carrier of the State of Qatar and serves 177 global destinations with a fleet of more than 250 modern aircraft. The award-winning airline’s main hub is located at Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha, Qatar.
Malaysia Airlines serves 59 destinations from their hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). Both airlines are members of the oneworld alliance and share benefits such as frequent-flyer status recognition with points accrual and redemption, lounge access, through & priority check-in, extra baggage allowance and priority boarding across member networks.
