On Friday (November 6, 2020), Qantas announced a major expansion of their network with three new routes from Canberra including service to Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Hobart. Starting November 19th, the carrier will offer three weekly flights between Canberra and Sunshine Coast, while the Canberra-Cairns route will operate twice weekly starting November 21st. Qantas will also offer three weekly flights between Canberra and Hobart from December 4, 2020. The airline has launched a total of nine new routes since state and territory border restrictions eased in September. In Friday’s announcement, Qantas Domestic and International’s CEO, Andrew David, said,

“With international borders still closed, Australians are more inspired than ever to explore places in their own backyard. We’ve taken a fresh look at our network, creating new direct services, which were previously only available by connecting via another city, saving customers up to two hours travel time. These flights are great news for travellers who will now have more direct flights between Canberra and Cairns, Noosa and Hobart. It will also mean we can get more of our people back to work.”

The new flights from Canberra will be operated by QantasLink with two-class Boeing 717s configured with 12 Business and 98 Economy Class seats. The added service follows the carrier’s recent launch of Canberra-Gold Coast flights, the resumption of flights to Perth and additional frequencies to Brisbane. To celebrate the launch of the new routes, Qantas has launched a three-day sale with special fares on select travel dates. One-way flights between Canberra and Cairns start at $199, while Canberra-Sunshine Coast flights start at $169 one-way. For a limited time, flights on the Canberra-Hobart route are available for $159 each way.
