On Thursday (February 13th), Finnair announced that they will be adding frequencies between Helsinki and New York-JFK for the summer 2020 season. The carrier will add three additional weekly flights on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays between April 4th and October 24th, and a fourth frequency on Tuesdays from May 4th, 2020. The carrier has offered service to New York for 50 years and currently operates daily flights to JFK. Finnair’s additional frequencies will add 250 flights and the routes will primarily operated with an Airbus A350. In Thursday’s announcement, Finnair’s Chief Commercial Officer, Ole Orvér said,
“For over 50 years, our JFK flights have been Finnair’s flagship route in North America, and we are truly excited to finally bring the A350 on this important route for Finnair. While preparing their summer travel plans, our customers will also have the flexibility of combining their travel with our other transatlantic partners, which operate over 105 city pairs between Europe and America.”
Finnair has partnered with oneworld® members American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia since 2013, providing more choices and connections through the airlines’ Atlantic Joint Business (AJB) partnership. This year, Finnair will operate five transatlantic US routes including year-round service to New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX), as well as seasonal service to Chicago (ORD), San Francisco (SFO) and Miami (MIA). The carrier has increased service to the US by 117% since 2015 and announced last September that Chef David Posey would become Finnair’s first-ever US Signature Menu Chef. Chef Posey has created Nordic-inspired menus for the airline’s Business Class guests traveling between the US and Helsinki.
Specializing in passenger and cargo traffic between Asia and Europe, Finnair has a competitive advantage due to their geographical location. The carrier serves 19 Asian, eight North American and 100 European destinations. Finnair is also the only Nordic network carrier with a 4-Star Skytrax rating and carried over 13 million passengers in 2018.
