On Thursday (October 8, 2020), AGEAN announced that they have received their first Airbus A321neo, the largest member of the A320neo Family of aircraft. AEGEAN has a total of 46 A320/321neos on order and expects to receive three additional A321neos by spring 2021, bringing their total deliveries of the aircraft type to nine. The carrier’s new A321neo is powered by Pratt & Whitney’s new generation GTF engines which deliver a 23% reduction in CO2 compared to their current Airbus fleet. The aircraft also offers a 50% reduction in NOx emissions and a 75% reduction in noise footprint. AEGEAN expects the aircraft to create a competitive advantage in the post-pandemic environment as it can accommodate 220 passengers, offers 16% reduced fuel consumption and adds an additional one hour flight range up to 4600 km. In Thursday’s announcement, AEGEAN’s CEO, Dimitris Gerogiannis, said,

“Against the catastrophic impact of the pandemic in aviation and AEGEAN in particular, we need to make immediate and painful adjustments and ensure increased resilience for the next difficult 12-18 months. At the same time, however, we need to support our vision for continuously developing our service offering to our passengers, for the ongoing strengthening of our competitiveness, but also for contributing substantially to the Greek economy. In this vision, A321neo, “the largest member” of the A320neo family, with its enhanced capabilities, will be the most important new tool for our team. We are proud to be able to welcome the first A321neo, and the three to follow, amidst such difficult conditions.”

AEGEAN and its subsidiary Olympic Air carried 15 million passengers in 2019 and the carrier has been honored ten out of the last eleven years with the Skytrax World Airline Award for ‘Best European Regional Airline.’
