easyJet has today announced the opening of a new maintenance hangar at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport. The new hangar will provide easyJet with the capacity to operate in the safest, efficient and most competitive manner.
On Wednesday (January 11, 2023), easyJet announced the opening of their first continental European maintenance hangar at Berlin-Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport (BER). Today’s opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Steinbach, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labour and Energy of the State of Brandenburg, Aletta von Massenbach, Chairman of the Management Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg Gmbh, and Thomas Haagensen, easyJet’s Group Markets Director and Managing Director of easyJet Europe. The $20 million, 10,000 square meter facility is located southwest of BER’s Terminal 1, and can accommodate up to four Airbus A321s at the same time.
In today’s announcement, easyJet’s Chief Operating Officer, Captain David Morgan, said,
“The opening of the maintenance hangar is a great milestone to start the year with. We would like to thank our partners for their support in carrying out this ambitious project and we look forward to returning one of the first aircraft maintained here today back into our operation. The NEO aircraft is equipped with the latest Descent Profile Optimisation (DPO) technology which is one of the ways we can achieve substantial and permanent carbon emission reductions by enabling the most efficient descents.
“So now our maintenance operations here at BER can get underway and we look forward to welcoming many more aircraft from our modern easyJet Europe fleet in the coming years as we continue to renew the fleet, with the ultimate ambition to transition our fleet to zero carbon emission aircraft.”
Construction on the new hangar was started in September 2021, and the facility was built in accordance with the German Building Energy Act, Gebäudeenergiegesetz (GED), and meets the requirements for energy efficient construction in the EU. The project was also supported by the Wirtschaftsförderung Brandenburg, as well as easyJet’s chosen partner, MRO Facilities, who managed the design and construction of the facility. The new maintenance hangar will support over 100 highly-skilled easyJet team members for the supervision and management of aircraft maintenance for the carrier’s continental Europe-fleet, which is currently comprised of 135 aircraft, including eight A320neos and five A321neos.
