Airbus Announces Strategic Partnership With Green Africa Airways, MoU for 50 A220s

At the Singapore Airshow Thursday, Airbus announced that Lagos, Nigeria-Based Green Africa Airways has singed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 50 A220-300s. Green Africa’s major order is the largest-ever A220 order from the African continent.

Today, Airbus announced from the Singapore Airshow that Lagos, Nigeria-based Green Africa Airways has signed a MoU for 50 A220-300s. This is the largest order of the aircraft type that Airbus has received from a carrier on the African continent.
 In Thursday’s announcement, Green Africa Airways’ Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Babawande Afolabi said,

“Together with Airbus, we are incredibly proud to announce the largest order ever for the A220 from the African continent. The Green Africa story is a story of entrepreneurial boldness, strategic foresight and an unwavering commitment to using the power of air travel to create a better future.”

Speaking from the Singapore Airshow, Airbus’ Chief Commercial Officer, Christian Scherer added,

“We are excited about the Green Africa project, its legitimate ambition and its professionalism, evidenced by their most discerning choice for their operating assets. The unique characteristics of the A220 will allow the airline to unlock destinations and route pairs that previously would have been considered non-viable. We look forward to our partnership with Green Africa and to accompany their development with the most efficient aircraft in its class.”

Currently, the Airbus A220 is the only purpose-built aircraft serving the 100-150 passenger market. Powered by Pratt & Whitney’s latest generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines, the aircraft offers a reduced noise footprint and a 20% reduction in fuel burn, while delivering the comfort of larger aircraft. As of the end of January 2019, Airbus had received a total of 658 A220 Family aircraft orders.
