Air France KLM Martinair Cargo Transports Dutch Brunel Solar Team’s Car to South Africa

The Dutch Brunel Solar Team’s car, which will drive in South Africa’s Sasol Solar Challenge in September, departed Amsterdam Schiphol on Saturday (August 6, 2022) onboard a Boeing 747 Freighter operated by Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLMP).

On Sunday (August 7, 2022), KLM announced that the Dutch Brunel Solar Team’s car, which will drive in South Africa’s Sasol Solar Challenge, departed Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on Saturday (August 6th) aboard a Boeing 747 Freighter operated by Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLM), the team’s official logistics partner this year. The team is made up of students from Delft University of Technology, and they have partnered with AFLKMP to transport the ‘Nuna 11s’ solar car from the Netherlands to South Africa and back.

As part of the airline Group’s commitment to sustainability, AFKLMP converted the fuel needed to fly the Nuna 11s from Amsterdam to Johannesburg into SAF, thereby reducing the cargo footprint of the journey. By using SAF, carbon emissions are reduced by at least 75 percent compared to traditional fossil kerosene. This year, the Sasol Solar Challenge will start in Johannesburg, South Africa on Friday September 9, 2022, and will end in Cape Town on Friday, September 16, 2022. The Dutch Brunel Solar Team departed for South Africa ahead of the Nuna 11s on Thursday, August 4, 2022.
